It’s the most wonderful time of the year… no, Christmas is not starting early. It’s Hallowe’en season! (Hey, if stores are putting up Christmas decorations already, I get the whole month of October for Hallowe’en. Next year maybe I’ll start in September.) And in celebration of my favorite holiday, The (Hopeful) Librarian is going all scary stories, all the time for the month of October.
Atmosphere is going to be the word of the month, because to me, atmosphere is what makes for a perfect Hallowe’en story. You can have as many zombies and vampires and demons as you like, but without the right atmosphere, it’s not a scary story.
Scary stories are not necessarily horror stories, nor are they necessarily monster stories or even supernatural stories. They’re the stories that remind you of fall, that hint of winter in the air and the rush of a chill wind, gold and crimson leaves falling in a graveyard, black crows and black cats and the hint of something uncanny out of the corner of your eye. Scary stories are the stories that give you a little shiver, and then never quite move on – things that are just this side of plausible.
I hope to have a little something for everyone, and I’ll be reviewing all kinds of things this month – old and new books, adult and YA, comic books, movies, and music, and even a board game. I’ll keep up my Saturday Shorts, featuring short stories available online to read right now, starting later this afternoon with one of my favorite scary stories of all time. And at the end of the month, I’ll be hosting a special Hallowe’en Read-a-Thon, details of which I hope to have up by next weekend.
What can you do? Join in! Let me know what you think of my selections, or if you have any October favorites of your own. And let me know if you’re hosting a Hallowe’en blog event – I definitely want to be there.
